If you had never given a thought about building a greenhouse this might be mildly helpful, but for anyone else you'll find it annoyingly elementary. But critical information is completely absent. For example, ventilation is a key component of greenhouses. Fan or no fan? How much ventilation? How many CFM for a give square foot in a give climate zone? Damper controls? Locations of dampers? Absolutely no guidance is given. Similar vague treatment of pretty much every other topic. There are many good greenhouse books out there. And lots of free guidance on the web. Spend your resources in those areas.

This book has many good points to recommend it, depending on your interests and skills. It would be a good reference for anyone contemplating construction of a greenhouse of one of several possible construction styles. It goes into considerable detail on both stand alone and lean-to style enclosures, as well as some detail on hoop style models. It is best read as a sort of overview survey of construction fundamentals applicable to the described configurations. Most of the description is in the form of text, and some with numbered paragraphs. While there are some drawings, most of the description is textual. If there is ever to be a later edition, I suggest the author replace at least some of the text description with drawings. While it would be possible for a construction neophyte to successfully construct a greenhouse of one of the included configuration styles with nothing more than this book for a reference, I think most readers would want to augment his or her library with additional construction references. If you are tool-handy and have built various other projects, I think you will find this book somewhat elementary. On the other hand, if you are a total newbie and have never even built a doghouse, this book will serve nicely as an introduction to construction and design skills in such structures and also includes a liberal assortment of different greenhouse styles for your reading pleasure. In other words, for the newbie at construction, this book can serve as a nice introduction to fundamentals of different types of greenhouse styles and their construction. I think it likely that anyone seriously interested a personal construction project will augment this book with additional references that clarify details. In other words, I can recommend this book as a sort of introductory overview to an assortment of different greenhouse styles and their construction, but if this were your sole reference, you would want to have some close at hand friends to help you with the myriad of little questions a first time constructor will encounter. In still other words, for the "right" audience, this book will be a useful asset ... but for many others, additional help will probably be needed.

G R E A T ! ! ! ! We have a small Greenhouse, and the information in this book is easy to read, easy to understand, and really, really helpful ! I wish we'd had this book when we were building our Greenhouse..... I would have done a few things differently ... Especially when it comes to heating / cooling / and ventilation !

If you already know which end of the screwdriver is sharp this one is probably not for you. This book is very, VERY basic. I did find the history of greenhouses very interesting but the rest of the book is way beneath even an average do it yourself type who already has some understanding of the purpose and function of a greenhouse. It's a low grade trade format on cheap paper with grainy black and white photos, so does not even provide inspirational photos to spur your creativity.

good book

When it says step-by-step it is. This book is written in simple step by step instructions but first covers the essentials to greenhouses, types of greenhouses, and everything you need to know and decide if you want a greenhouse. It is well written, easy to understand, simple yet informative. A small but extremely packed with just what you need to know.

seemed outdated

I was considering building my own green house to help in growing veggies. This book has fantastic, easy to understand information and plans on how to build your own. Glad I bought it.

I purchased "A Life in Parts" with a mixture of excitement and dread because one never knows how an author - let alone an ex-spouse - will portray certain aspects of his life. I came away with a sense of relief and confirmation that - yes, Bryan is still the Bryan I knew when our meals consisted of whatever he could bring home from his job as a waiter or the 1,000 ways of preparing the bags of zucchini his mother left on our doorstep. The book reads...like Bryan.Bryan's writing is unaffected by fame and fortune and is his own voice. He tells his story clearly, with exactly the right words for the situation and the precise amount of pages devoted to each "part" of his life. If his book seems to devote little to Breaking Bad or Malcom in the Middle, it's because those are just parts of the whole that is Bryan Cranston. The book is honest, witty, sensitive, funny, unapologetic, and heartbreaking. And that, too, is Bryan Cranston. When reading, be prepared to laugh and cry, for this is a story of a man who came from sad circumstances, made the best of what he had (incredible talent), and stayed true to his dream. The book is a fast read, but you will find yourself picking it back up and rereading parts to experience them again and again. Bryan Cranston is a man who continues to live a life in parts, and it is my privilege to have been one such part.

I found this to be a fascinating book, cover-to-cover. There is a lot to love.Bryan wrote fairly short chapters, each describing an aspect of his life (i.e. a "part"). Bryan's childhood experiences (he had a rough childhood) were fascinating. The experiences that led him to want to do well at acting were equally fascinating. His experiences as an actor were also fascinating. His romances (some of which didn't end well) were also a great read. Bryan in places discusses his shortcomings--I admire him for being so candid. For you Breaking Bad fans ... yes, he does talk in detail about the show.As an electrical engineer who does software, I found his stories about acting as a vocation to be fascinating because they are so ... different than engineering. For example, he talks about the cast and crew crying and hugging each other after the filming of a very emotional scene or when filming the final episodes after a show has been cancelled (and they know they won't work together for very much longer). (That sort of crying and hugging does not occur in engineering LOL.)

This is the most honest memoir that I've ever read. Bryan Cranston bares his mind and soul to the point the reader can feel his anguish, his concerns, his victories as well as enjoy him laughing at himself over some of the most ludicrous moments. This would make an incredible autobiographical film about someone who wills himself to be successful at a vocation in which his father failed. He reflects on both his success and failures refusing to take shortcuts wanting to always to represent honestly his trade. Even as he was sometimes critical of his life he was careful to not paint others in a bad light but present them as they were: a father never realizing his success, always chasing windmills and a mother, heart broken over her husband's leaving, becoming a bitter alcoholic with several failed relationships while trying to replace her departed husband. If there was one failure in the book it was the lack of details about Robin, his wife, and his daughter. Obviously he is proud and devoted to both but I'm sure they both had their moments of be disappointing (they are both human, after all). I'm already looking forward to the sequel of his life going forward or, if not that, a further study of the Cranston philosophy in making life the best it can be. This was a thoroughly delightful book to read.

I "Like" it because it's a good read. I might have "Loved" it, except I actually wish I hadn't read it at all. Here's why: I realize I like my favorite performers to be a blank slate. If I know too much about their politics or their process as a performer (the latter being the case with this book), it begins to get in the way of my enjoyment of the actor's work. I'd rather NOT know, for example, that Cranston was unhappy with a particular "Breaking Bad" scene. Sometimes a little mystery is a good thing.

If you told me I could sit down for lunch with any 3 people in all of history, Brian Cranston would be one of those people. This momoir solidified that belief. This book was emotional, hilarious, and inspirational. It was a beautifully written and constructed book that I couldn't put down (you don't say that for many memoirs). His life is truly a life in parts and the book was written that way. Such an interesting life, coming from a man with an abstract yet down to earth take on that life. I recommend this read to anyone, fan or not. 5/5.

I recently listened to this on a long drive. This was my first book of this type but I am very happy to have given it a shot. The author has a great voice for this and keeps the reading lively and never dull. Being from California myself, it was nice to know a lot of the places referred to in the book. I am not an actor but I very much appreciated the insight into being one and what goes into it from the author's artistic view. My sister is an actor and I feel like I learned a lot about that world from this book. Brian also has had an interesting life aside from his acting. This was a pleasure to listen to.

This was such an entertaining and insightful book. I have always enjoyed Bryan Cranston's work. He is talented and a consummate actor. Who knew he was also a fantastic storyteller? A story filled with humor but also sadness as Mr. Cranston relieves his childhood and parents' broken dreams. It's an honest portrayal of the experiences and struggles he faced that made him the man and talent he is today. It's not your typical bio in the sense that it doesn't chronologically recount every aspect of his life. Rather, Mr. Cranston poignantly touches the most important parts of his backstory while beautifully weaving in the laughter and life lessons this history embodies. This is a must read and is hard to put down.

About the Author

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.

A childhood favorite series so I just had to have these editions! They are perfect.

I’m really impressed with this set of books..the binding is really beautiful! I’ve noticed several complaints from other reviewers because these books don’t have the illustrations but if you read the description then you’d notice that it mentions that the illustrations aren’t included. Maybe take a moment to read the product description before purchasing. The story is good enough to stand on its own..illustrations or not!

Beautiful set

Great edition to add to my library!

Excellent quality. I will pass them on to my grand kids.

My daughter absolutely loves these books.

who doesn't enjoy Laura Ingalls Wilder

I didn't not realize this new boxed set does not have the illustrations. Had I known j would not have bought.

Finally a fourth edition after one year delay. It is actually 463 pages, not the 288 as described. Third edition had 270 pages.Very comprehensive. Almost every section has been expanded.23 total sections.Very useful four pages of pediatric dosing tables of common drugs to mL per age / weight groups.I kept my dog eared 3rd edition to my side, despite having multiple PDA apps on my phone. It is so much easier to thumb through the pages and glance down for quick facts. For more detailed info, I then go to my 5mcc and UpToDate phone apps.I kept copies on desk and gave away to students who rotate through.

Great little handbook to refer back to but the print is, like, 2 or 3 font.I wish they made this in a larger format, like they make their pharma book. One star removed for the eyestrain :-)

I really like this reference. You look up hypertension and it takes you through a full plan of care on how to treat the patient which is helpful for new practitioners and experienced as well to give them an outline they can refer to. There is a nurse practitioner that has been one over 20 years and she has one of these. Great resource and I am glad I bought it.

I wish I had paid attention to one of the other reviews. The print is so small in this book, I can barely read it with a magnifying glass! The book is teeny and would fit in a breast pocket of a lab coat, but I would rather pay extra for a book with larger print which fits in a hip pocket. I am sure the content is excellent - Tarascon does produce some very useful books, however PLEASE consider making these books a little bigger!I gave the book 3 stars because I am sure it is great, BUT the size of the book and print makes it unusable for a lot of people over 40...I just bought this book, but I am going to sell it back to Amazon...

I attempted to use this as handbook while on an MS3 family medicine rotation. It does contain some useful information, but the cramped layout makes it difficult to find in a hurry (and in primary care you never have more than a couple minutes to read up between patients), and the tiny text is actually pretty difficult to read (even for someone used to reading webpages on a tiny phone screen). I used the AAFP online instead, as I had access to a computer at the clinic, and it was much more helpful than this mini-book.

good book with useful information. Kind of chunky but not terrible. Probably will be useful for the first year or two but will probably use UpToDate more.

Great information in this book that comes highly recommended. Difficult to read though as the book is VERY small.

My best reference for years. My books mysteriously disappear at work so I bought a previous edition to save costs. For most things, I prefer this edition.

Dead Wake proves them right...History at its harrowing best." —New York Daily News"A quickly paced, imminently readable exploration of an old story you may only half-know."—Arkansas Democratic Gazette "We all know how the story ends, but Larson still makes you want to turn the pages, and turn them quickly. What makes the story, is that Larson takes a few main characters--the Lusitania's Captain William Thomas Turner, President Woodrow Wilson, U-boat Captain Walther Schweiger, Boston bookseller Charles Lauriat, architect Theodate Pope, and a few minor ones--and weaves them together towards the inevitable and tragic conclusion. Larson has done his research. The number of details and anecdotes that he has managed to cobble together are fascinating in themselves."—Foreign Policy"Larson turns this familiar tale into a finely written elegy on the contingency of war."—Maclean's Magazine“Larson is a master storyteller and quickens the pace as target and attackers hurtle toward their inevitable, deadly rendezvous. The suspense builds because readers care about his fully-formed characters, and it’s not always clear who will live and who will die.”—Salon"Because Larson has such a sense of story, when he gets to the tragedy itself, the book hums along in vivid form. You feel, viscerally, what it's like to be on a sinking ship, and the weight of life lost that day. The fact that this is coming through a page-turner history book, where all the figures and details reveal an impeccable eye and thorough research, is just one of the odd pleasures of Larson's writing."—Flavorwire“[Larson] thrillingly chronicles the liner’s last voyage... He draws upon a wealth of sources for his subject – telegrams, wireless messages, survivor depositions, secret intelligence ledgers, a submarine captain’s war log, love letters, admiralty and university archives, even morgue photos of Lusitania victims… Filled with revealing political, military and social information, Larson’s engrossing Dead Wake is, at its heart, a benediction for the 1,198 souls lost at sea.”—Tampa Bay Times"Larson, an authority on nonfiction accounts, expounds on our primary education, putting faces to the disaster and crafting an intimate portrait in Dead Wake. A lover of history will get so close to the story...that it is hard not to feel as if you are on board with new friends..."—Fort Worth Star-Telegram"In a well-paced narrative, Larson reveals the forces large and small, natural and man-made, coincidental and intentional, that propelled the Lusitania to its fatal rendezvous...Larson's description of the moments and hours that followed the torpedo's explosive impact is riveting...Dead Wake stands on its own as a gripping recounting of an episode that still has the power to haunt a reader 100 years later."—Buffalo News"Larson, who was once described as "an historian with a novelist's soul," has written a book which combines the absorbing tenor of fiction with the realities of history."—The Toronto Sun"[Larson] shows that narrative history can let us have it both ways: great drama wedded to rigorous knowledge. The German torpedoing of the great ship 100 years ago was almost as deadly as the Titanic sinking, and far more world-changing. Larson makes it feel as immediate and contingent as the present day."—NY Mag's Vulture.com"The bestselling author of The Devil in the White City and Thunderstruck puts his mastery of penning parallel narratives on display as he tells the tale of the sinking of the Lusitania by a German submarine, building an ever-growing sense of dread as the two vessels draw closer to their lethal meeting...He goes well beyond what's taught in history classes to offer insights into British intelligence and the dealings that kept the ship from having the military escort so many passengers expected to protect it...By piecing together how politics, economics, technology, and even the weather combined to produce an event that seemed both unlikely and inevitable, he offers a fresh look at a world-shaking disaster."—The Onion A/V Club"An intriguing, entirely engrossing investigation into a legendary disaster."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review"Factual and personal to a high degree, the narrative reads like a grade-A thriller."—Booklist, starred review"[Larson] has always shown a brilliant ability to unearth the telling details of a story and has the narrative chops to bring a historical moment vividly alive. But in his new book, Larson simply outdoes himself...What is most compelling about Dead Wake is that, through astonishing research, Larson gives us a strong sense of the individuals—passengers and crew—aboard the Lusitania, heightening our sense of anxiety as we realize that some of the people we have come to know will go down with the ship. A story full of ironies and 'what-ifs,' Dead Wake is a tour de force of narrative history."—BookPage, Top Pick"With a narrative as smooth as the titular passenger liner, Larson delivers a riveting account of one of the most tragic events of WWI...A blunt reminder that war is, at its most basic, a matter of life and death."—Publishers Weekly"Once again, Larson transforms a complex event into a thrilling human interest story. This suspenseful account will entice readers of military and maritime history along with lovers of popular history."—Library Journal"Critically acclaimed 'master of narrative nonfiction' Erik Larson has produced a thrilling account of the principals and the times surrounding this tumultuous event in world history...After an intimate look at the passengers, and soon-to-be victims, who board in New York despite the warning of 'unrestricted warfare' from the German embassy, Larson turns up the pace with shorter and shorter chapters alternating between the hunted and the hunter until the actual shot. All in all a significant story. Well told."—Florida Times-Union"...the tension mounts page by page and the reading of Dead Wake becomes a very cinematic experience." —Summit DailyFrom the Hardcover edition.

This is a wonderfully written piece of fiction that brings a hundred year old event to life in an easy to read style. It almost reads like a novel. times, The chapters dealing with the attack and the escape attempts were stark and bone chilling even as the reader knows the results. The author does an excellent job brings depicting the lead characters including Walther Schwieger , Woodrow Wilson, and Wm. Turner as well as many passengers aboard the ill-fated ship. More importantly he shed life on some conspiracy theories that I was unaware of before reading this book. He lays out a fairly convincing case that British officials may have deliberately allowed the Lusitania to be sunk so that America would enter the war. Even if not a deliberate plot, they may have recklessly permitted the act. And the parallels of room 40 with the enigma code in War 11 were uncanny. This is a wonderful book that will leave you troubled and deeply saddened by the loss of 1lmost 1,200 lives so long ago.

Erik Larson is not capable of writing anything less than a gripping account of history. All of his previous books have been spellbinding accounts of storms, cities, crimes, inventions, ships and/or war. In DEAD WAKE: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania, Larson returns to the subjects of war and ships and stirs in a potent mixture of international politics as well as a little romance to once again seduce his readers with a contemporary view of an historical situation.Written to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania, a Cunard passenger liner sunk by a German U-Boat, Larson's account differs in several ways from other well-known books produced on the subject. Diana Preston's LUSITANIA: An Epic Tragedy, published in 2002, is one of the best-written accounts of the disaster. The difference between Preston's work and Larson's might be found in the subtitle of the Larson book which emphasizes the crossing while Preston's book is most memorable for its account of the sinking and its aftermath, particularly accounts of survival. No one can read Preston's book without feeling as if he/she is clinging to a piece of wreckage in a cold, spring sea awaiting rescue. No one can read Larson's book and not feel like the proverbial fly on the wall in the infamous Room 40 of the British Admiralty. While Preston addressed Room 40, in Larson's writing, the room takes on a role and becomes a character (albeit not a very appealing one) in its own right.Larson skillfully gets into the mindset of Winston Churchill and how determined he was to see America enter the war. In the States, Larson goes back in time and brings President Woodrow Wilson to life through a love affair that seemed to take up more of his time than thinking about the suitability of America's neutrality. Yet Larson allows readers to see Wilson in a most human light; perhaps the love affair gave him the strength for the decisions he had to make later. While the reader feels a connection with Wilson and also with the much-maligned but ultimately blameless Captain of the Lusitania, Captain Turner, utter horror and strong dislike is brought out when we read about Captain Schwieger of U-Boat 20 and, in a strange way, perhaps even more when we examine the real-life characters and goings-on within the Admiralty's Room 40. Germany and Britain both emerge as more than a bit despicable. The pluses of Larson's latest work are his acute examination of Room 40, his up-close look at Woodrow Wilson, and his ability to swing between the behind-the-scenes action and balance his discoveries with a conventional but absorbing look at some of the passengers on board the Lusitania all while building a true and terrifying suspense in the narrative. His profile of Charles Lauriat, Boston bookseller and collector of rare documents and drawings, is excellent. One senses that Larson was truly interested in Lauriat and might, having not been faced with producing a book to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Lusitania's sinking, have chosen Lauriat as a sole subject for a book or article.Erik Larson can never disappoint. Whether one reads a great deal about WWI history, maritime disasters, or early 1900s international politics, there is something new to be learned in DEAD WAKE. For those who have read very little about the Lusitania, this book is an excellent starting point. As mentioned before, Diana Preston's LUSITANIA: An Epic Tragedy tells a similar story but with a slightly different approach. Both books have something to offer, but Larson's, being newer, may include some fresh revelations about the history we thought we knew.

Retelling a story that has been told many times already is either foolish (what’s new?) or courageous (see what’s new!). Larson successfully manages to bring a fresh perspective to a tale that I felt I knew.Dead Wake- The Last Crossing of the Lusitania is a surprisingly well crafted re-telling of a known event. Despite knowing the outcome - the loss of nearly 1,200 souls at the hands of a German U-boat in the spring of 1917 - Larson keeps pulling the reader along. He does so by adopting many perspectives - those of passengers on the cruise ship, crew members on the U-boat, Woodrow Wilson in the White House to name just a few - with just the right amount of telling detail to bring the reader into the moment. Reading Dead Wake is a tutorial in early twentieth century naval architecture, morality, social manners and political history.Larson shows how the sinking of the Lusitania was, for many, a “Straw that Broke the Camel’s Back”. Taken in isolation, this was a tragedy. Indeed, the captains of the Lusitania and the U-Boat, Cunard executives, Woodrow Wilson, Winston Churchill and Kaiser Wilhelm made assumptions about each other’s behaviors and interests which proved to be tragically wrong. Put in the context of the beginning of World War I, the sinking altered the course of history by dragging the United States into the conflict. In other ways, the event was a classical tipping point. One era - the world of Victorian manners and gentlemanly wars - ended and another - the era of global modern warfare and the emergence of American leadership - began. Never again would it be safe to assume a bright line between civilian (commercial) and political (military interests).Hanging over the Lusitania disaster is a sense of avoidable inevitability. If any one of many points along the voyage - slowing down to pick up mail, changing course to get bearings, information not transmitted from British intelligence - had gone differently the Lusitania would not have had a rendezvous with its tragic destiny. It would have steamed calmly into port. However, they didn’t go the other way and history as we now know it unfolded. We now live in a world where we try to take lessons from this eminently avoidable disaster. Technology dependence? The Lusitania was too fast and too big to be sunk. False assumptions about the enemy? The Germans miscalculated British and American reactions. Changing social mores? The British put civilians in harms way for military purposes. For that alone, Larson’s use of history to illuminate the past to help in the present is invaluable. We had our own Lusitania disaster with 9/11. What will the next one be?As with ether books by Eirk Larson (In the Garden of the Beasts and the Devil in the White City) the reader learns not just about the event, but about the era in which the event took place. We are nearly a century beyond the values of Victorian England and adolescent America. In some ways we have made progress, in other ways we cling stubbornly to outmoded beliefs which ultimately do us great harm.Read this to know more about the past and to be better prepared for the future.

Review

"Let me strongly encourage readers to buy, read, and thoroughly absorb two important new books: Rod Dreher's The Benedict Option and Anthony Esolen's Out of the Ashes. Dreher (Orthodox) is an articulate, provocative, and insightful social commentator. Esolen (Catholic) is a distinguished scholar and educator whose English translation of Dante Alighieri's majestic Divine Comedy ranks among the finest available anywhere. Neither man's book disappoints in the power of its arguments. Both men have the gift of combining erudition with common sense, and of making their ideas available and engaging to the harried ordinary reader. Both books offer a tough, frank, and true assessment of contemporary American culture. Both also share an adult Christian grasp of the virtue of hope and a deep trust in the goodness of God. Each offers practical steps forward in sustaining and rebuilding Christian life in confused times." --First Things Magazine "Out of the Ashes is a full-throated, stout-hearted call to arms--soul-stirring, uncompromising, and irresistible." --ROD DREHER, author of The Benedict Option "Reading Anthony Esolen is a bit like a ride on your favorite roller coaster. Out of the Ashes is an astonishing combination of energy, humor, insight, and exceptionalerudition, topped off by a vivid personal style and a special gift for tweaking thenose of secularist nonsense-peddlers. If you're looking for a guide to our current cultural predicament (and how to fix it), one that's sobering and invigorating at the same time, start with this book." --CHARLES J. CHAPUT, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Philadelphia "Anthony Esolen is one of our nation's best writers because he's one of our best thinkers. Out of the Ashes is vintage Esolen: eloquent, bold, insightful, profound." -- RYAN T. ANDERSON, Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow, The Heritage Foundation, and author of Truth Overruled: The Future of Marriage and ReligiousFreedom"Our culture suffers from many debilitating diseases. Anthony Esolen's voice is amuch-needed tonic. Here's hoping America heeds his counsel." --R. R. RENO, editor of First Things and author of Resurrecting the Idea of a Christian Society

The first question: “What do you do when an entire civilization is crumbling around you?” All of the text that follows is drawn from the book’s jacket notes and gives the reader a quick summary of the book’s contents. It is a reliable summary. The book is a pious jeremiad. The author is a fervent Catholic who gives no quarter with regard to essential principles. The rhetoric is prophetic, in the sense that the speaker/author stands upon a mountaintop, surveying a vast array of human behavior, and systematically records our current failures, failures which in many cases are revealed as madness. We dwell in a morass of failure; we have sold our souls for a form of secular materialism that is, ultimately, vacuous. We have magnified Thoreau’s ‘lives of quiet desperation’, lost our sense of beauty, of love, of meaning, of learning, of manhood and of womanhood. We permit ourselves to be ruled by remote, self-serving bureaucracies and tyrannical courts and central governments. Disconnected from divinity our every step is doomed and yet we continue the slog. This is a very brave book, one that—to put it mildly—runs against the current grain. The message is an important one, one that all should hear and reflect upon. I think its conclusions should be considered very carefully.I also think its conclusions should be considered empirically. For example, the notion that we once built objects of great beauty and fail to do so now. Some of this is opinion (opinion with which I fully agree, but opinion nonetheless). He prefers the art deco masterpieces of the depression to the international style glass boxes that look like a mixture of bureaucracy palaces and minimum security prisons. He speaks of the beauty of one-room, spired schoolhouses which create an ethos of the infinite as well as the public square, contextualizing the experiences that are heard and felt, within. I personally prefer Magdalen College, Addison’s Walk and the river Cherwell, but the question, a fair question, remains: why do we lack the vision (in our wealthy societies) to build objects of beauty?Dr. Esolen would return to traditional conceptions of male and female roles, believing them to be anchored in human nature. I don’t see us returning to 1954 anytime soon, though I share his belief that our current cultural practices are radically flawed. These are difficult rivers to navigate, but perhaps the technology which he sees as tyrannizing over us can be a source of hope, enabling the mother, father, or both to work at home and raise children in more traditional ways. The actual breakup of the family (as opposed to the repositioning of the family) is as significant a problem as he perceives it to be, particularly when it ripples through our school ‘systems’, creating further disorder and failure. Our subservience to government, particularly a government with values that run counter to our own, has resulted in a realignment of political power, on which the jury is still out. Some of his principles appear wistful, but they echo with my own experience. He longs for the return to the play of childhood, with kids outdoors, exercising, interacting and developing. When I published a book on my adolescence I was interviewed by a local radio station. The first question—asked by a young man who was probably 30-35 years younger than me—concerned ‘those wonderful times when you could play outside, safely, in your neighborhood, in, e.g., the local woods’. I told him that every summer day in my youth was an adventure, beginning at first light and continuing until dinner time. But then, I pointed out, we were safe in Fenwick Park Woods because we were armed with knives, hatchets and BB guns. Some of Dr. Esolen’s book is almost Wordsworthian in its memories of childhood, though he is aware that we were human in all senses of that term, for good or ill.In some ways this book is like a copy of Reminisce magazine, but it is undergirded with considerable wisdom and a broad range of classical reference. At the same time it is a hard-nosed philippic that makes strong, defensible points and challenges a status quo that has, in many ways, failed us miserably.I don’t want to write a comparably-sized book here, but just a few points: the discussion of higher ed is spot-on, but I’m not sure that the encouraging and building of small, focused colleges (that, inevitably, will not be able to do serious science, engineering, etc.) will be sufficient to solve our problem. Second, the views of George Steiner on the necessity of the presence of the divine for all significant human activity would add greater weight to the argument. Finally, the discussion should go on, but with a greater sense of the details in which the devil is known to dwell. When one is moved by the spirit wonderful things can happen, but one should also spell names correctly (it’s James, not Joseph Boswell and Carrie, not Carry Nation).Bottom line: a thoughtful, honest and important book.

Reading this book is like wearing sackcloth and heaping ashes on your head. It certainly brings home to you that things have gone wrong, but unless the act of penance itself calls forth redemption, which sadly today it does not, without further action it only makes you feel bad and gets you dirty.Don’t get me wrong—I am all for sackcloth and ashes. Hence, I am busy preparing for what is, for a certain type of conservative, the Event of the Year—the publication in one week of Rod Dreher’s "The Benedict Option." To prepare for this, I am reading all the books with a closely related theme that have been published in the past several months. There are, depending on how you count, roughly five such books, among them this book, Anthony Esolen’s "Out of the Ashes." It is disconcerting to note, though, that roughly 80% of the blurb quotes for each of the five books come from the authors of the other four books. I am not sure what that says, if anything, but it may suggest a small audience for all these books. And if these books are to do more than preach to the converted, they need a significant audience, or they need to be exceptionally valuable to a core audience. But "Out of the Ashes," unfortunately, accomplishes neither goal. Oh, it’s an excellent book with excellent writing, and I agree with nearly 100% of what Esolen has to say. After reading it, though, I find myself knowing neither more facts nor having a clear sense of what Esolen thinks we should actually do about the problems he outlines. His book is a jeremiad, but that is not the problem. Jeremiads may not be to everyone’s taste, but Jeremiah, after all, chose his methods and the tone of his message for a reason (although let’s not forget he failed in his aims). The difference is that Jeremiah got his message across by getting physically in front of a mass target audience (who promptly tried to kill him). I am sure Esolen is brave enough to also do that. He is currently being persecuted at his academic employer, Providence College, though he does not mention that in the book. But those who read this book, unfortunately, all or almost all already know the litany of horrors Esolen presents, and are already just as horrified as Esolen. The book will therefore not reach a mass audience, and the audience it does reach will know neither new facts nor have a concrete action plan. They’ll just be sad.Esolen begins with an introduction, evocatively (and characteristically) titled “The Rubble.” Using the metaphor of a decayed family, mansion and town, he succinctly lays out the devastation he sees everywhere in today’s society, and quotes Livy, the historian of the very late Republic, that we “sank lower and lower, and finally began the downward plunge which has brought us to the present time, when we can endure neither our vices nor their cure.” The devastation, of course, is not material so much as cultural—the destruction of beauty and virtue. From here, Esolen first calls for “The Restoration of Truth-Telling.” This is a personal call to each reader, and I think this is the best and most practical part of the book. Esolen sees us adrift in a sea of unreality, in which even the names of things are ever-shifting. Like the Archmage Ged in LeGuin’s "A Wizard of Earthsea" (a fantastic trilogy ruined by LeGuin’s later shrewish re-visitation and re-interpretation), or Puddleglum in C.S. Lewis’s "The Silver Chair," we viscerally know that to give things their true names is both to understand and to have power over them, what otherwise have power over us. We should, each of us, begin by “clearing our minds of cant,” rejecting the multiplicities of lies we are fed, from that the Constitution has a right to privacy, and that right guarantees the right to kill children, to that family structure does not matter to society, to unexamined meta-lies like “Religion is the cause of almost all wars.” We should reject using words that have no meaning other than political force, such as “diversity,” “inclusion,” “equality,” and “homophobia.” We should focus on the real, for “it is hard to go completely mad if you spend your free time being free and accepting the free bounties of the world round about. . . . Things, in their beautiful and imposing integrity, do not easily bend to lies.” So, focusing on real things, we should learn to speak and read, with the depth of knowledge, learning and appreciation of virtue and beauty that at one time characterized all writing for educated people. The next call is for “Restoring a Sense of Beauty.” One sentence by way of example should give a flavor for much of Esolen’s writing, “I have seen beautifully tiled floors, their intricate cruciform patterns bespeaking careful and devoted craftsmanship, covered over with a plush red carpet, wall to wall, such as might be used in a whorehouse down on its luck.” Here Esolen particularly focuses on music, noting the neutering and watering down of traditional hymns, and calling for the restoration of their publication and performance. And not just hymns, of course, but the churches themselves—we should restore them from the metaphorical and often actual plywood that has been laid over the beauty of old churches, and create beautiful new ones. Esolen returns to this theme later in the book, with a call to once again surround ourselves with beauty, in part by returning to craft ourselves, to “work that is good for man” and in part by getting rid of middlemen rent-seekers, like colleges and government regulators, to allow the raising and employment of skilled craftsmen once again. How this is to be done is not clear, since those craftsmen first have to live, and demand for their services has disappeared, so there is a real chicken-and-egg problem. Esolen cares little for economics and has no interest in maximizing GDP per capita, but ignoring the importance of practical economy does not lessen its importance to daily life, and to the difficulties inherent in changing ways of making a living.Esolen next decries the current state of education, both in schools and in colleges. As to schools, he parades the known horribles—lowest common denominator teaching; radical leftist indoctrination; failure to teach any morals or anything about human nature or virtue, all of which he contrasts to an idealized one-room schoolhouse of the past. Esolen is, of course, correct that the common inheritance of the West, mostly based on religion and wholly dependent on religion for its idiom, is gone, and it would be impossible to teach the "Canterbury Tales" in schools without first imparting an endless litany of facts that used to be common knowledge, from what a pilgrimage is to who Thomas Becket was. He calls for more homeschooling. Esolen is correct that complete catechization of children requires homeschooling. He is not correct that this is necessary to prevent total indoctrination, since he ignores that despite the horribles we all know, there are actually many public schools where, at least at the elementary level, things are not that bad in the actual teaching, and a parent’s main job is managing the social milieu, not the classroom instruction.Colleges are worse, of course. Esolen notes the mottoes of various famous colleges and their utter inapplicability to the institutions that occupy the physical locations of those vanished halls of learning, such as Dartmouth’s "Vox clamantis in deserto": “The voice of one crying in the wilderness.” I am certain that only a handful of Dartmouth students could correctly delineate the meaning, derivation and weight of that phrase, and none without importing hackneyed political commentary at the same time. Here, Esolen’s recommendations become more concrete. “We must build new colleges. This is an absolute necessity.” He cites exemplars such as Christendom College and Hillsdale.I think this is absolutely correct, but of course the purpose of the higher education complex in America today is not education, but indoctrination while acting as gatekeepers, offering at tremendous cost of money and time a credential that allows easy entrance into the “meritocratic” clerisy that governs America. Creating what is in essence a parallel higher education system would create educated human beings. But existing alternatives (e.g.,. Christendom) are not just a parallel education system; they are also an alternative means of obtaining that necessary credential, perhaps at the cost of making it not as effective a credential, but one nonetheless. If they could not do that, very few parents would make the choice for their children of wholly foreclosing entrance into the clerisy. And, of course, as is common with conservative writers, Esolen fails to appreciate the destructive force that will be aimed at such new institutions if they gain enough traction to become a threat to the existing higher education complex and to the lock the Left has on indoctrination. Already the power of accreditation is used to force ideological conformity; in a future Democratic administration we can expect vicious, concentrated attacks on any set of colleges that seem to be attaining critical mass as a parallel system. (Though, I must admit, the success of homeschooling in the United States over past decades suggests I may be wrong about this. Forty years ago homeschooling wasn’t even legal in many states; now millions of students are homeschooled without any widespread attempt by the Left to suppress the practice, despite that it comprises a bulwark against Leftist domination. Why this is deserves further analysis.)Later chapters issue uncompromising calls for restoring traditional views of men and women, and rejecting masculinizing women and feminizing men, as well as homosexuality and gender fluidity. This is, of course, merely recognizing reality and human nature, which show us that men and women are different and complementary, an obvious truism that now is radical even to utter. Esolen also calls for restoring the sense of play among children, rather than pushing sports as chore and accomplishment.Esolen ends his book by a call for subsidiarity—the revitalization of the middle, non-governmental structures of society, and the devolution of as much power as possible, now ever more concentrated at the top, to those structures. “[S]ocial concerns should be left to the smallest group that can reasonably deal with them, the group that is nearest the concerns in question.” Although this is certainly true, it seems to me that this by itself, even if could be accomplished, will not produce the society Esolen wants. As Yuval Levin notes in "The Fractured Republic", “Subsidiarity means no one gets to have their way exclusively.” On Esolen’s own premises, of the nearly complete degradation of society, subsidiarity would mean some progress, but not over-much, if the vast majority of the individuals who make up society are already so far gone from the path of virtue. Esolen also (briefly) calls for us to revive our own social life, and to resist the ever-greater encroachments of the federal government. Together these things, if successful, might make subsidiarity possible, but doing all this is a tall order, and, unfortunately, not one Esolen has any concrete suggestions how to accomplish.Esolen in more than one place in this book touches on a topic that has bothered me for a long time, which is the habit in certain Christian churches to not, whenever possible, use a pronoun to refer to God. This practice is typically referred to with the euphemism “gender-inclusive.” Thus, “God took his . . . ” becomes “God took God’s . . . .” Of course this sounds unnatural, a very bad beginning for any sentence that involves God. The standard rejoinder is, perfectly accurately, that God has no sex and is, obviously, neither a “he” nor a “she.” This rejoinder is a cover for the real reason, that those pushing this new usage regard it as degrading or disempowering to women to refer to God as “he.” However, as Esolen points out, in English this usage necessarily sends the “message that God is not personal at all, but a concept, a thing.” This is what I had not seen before—dropping the pronoun as a matter of course is theologically unsound for precisely this reason. Whatever today’s grammar radicals may say, in English “he” is and should be the generic pronoun, and has always been understood to encompass all humanity. It is “she” that is limiting, because it is artificial and forced, and conveys a political message distracting from the meaning of any sentence in which it used. More than that, Jesus instructed us to call God “Father” and, of course, Jesus is male in his human nature, suggesting certain masculine characteristics are emblematic of God. Using “she” for the generic pronoun for God would therefore not just be jarring because of its political overtones, but it would be theologically dubious as applied to the Trinity, and merely false as applied to Jesus in his human nature. Rather than being apologetic about it, we should therefore reject any other usage but “he” as the pronoun for God.Finally, I think that Esolen errs by repeatedly comparing the best possible of the past to the worst possible of the present. This is a propaganda technique unworthy of a serious call to social action. Yes, jeremiads are, in essence, propaganda. But it is still a distorted vision, and clarity of vision is important if strong, consistent action is to be taken. Esolen conveys with multiple examples that he would be happy, on most levels, with the American life of the late 19th or early 20th Century. Not only is this unrealistic, but I think Esolen overstates the virtue of the past. You can’t go back, and we need a moral sense and moral actions that can take root in today’s world as it actually is, not paeans to one-room schoolhouses, as good as they may have been at their best. I am hoping Dreher’s "The Benedict Option" will be the clear path to action that this book is not.

This is a book with real insight. It provides a reminder of what we have lost, both as a people and as individuals, but it does not rest content with this but calls us to gird up our loins so that we may reclaim a more human life for ourselves and for our children. This is a Christian book. The author is Roman Catholic but it speaks to every Christian and the author is clearly conversant with the broad range of orthodox Christian thought and experience. While any person may benefit from this book I would particularly encourage parents or people who aspire to be parents to read this book. It will help enrich your vision of how you can raise your children to live more fully the life that God intended man to live in the midst of His creation.

Sometimes it takes the author a while to get to the point, but the journey there is agreeable. She has a fabulous way with words like, "She reminded me of Cleopatra, in de-Nile". I felt for the downtrodden heroine Dellarobia, but also was aware that many of her circumstances were of her own making. You can have a small house in a rural community, but it doesn't have to be unclean or disorderly. Having two small children does not seem to me to sufficient reason to live in this way. Dellarobia moves from one infatuation to another, never realizing until the last that she is her own way out. Kingsolver's characters are well-defined.There is a lot about Monarch butterflies, much I'd never even considered. That was interesting. The author does get a bit "preachy" about the environment and global warming, some of which was germane to the story, but probably more was in the book than necessary to make the point. There are side threads about Dovey and Hester, and a little gotcha there in the story. I think you will enjoy the book.

Flight Behavior is a work of fiction based on scientific truths. The characters are entwined with secrets and unspoken feelings as well as small town gossip and assumptions.. The book begins with the flight behavior of Dellarobia fleeing her marriage and circumstances, which rapidly changes into a magic like transformation. She returns home to face criticism and acclaim. This quickly turns into TV reporters, videos, and social media, in addition to strangers assailing her home. When the "miracle" she encountered on the mountain is revealed as a mass migration of Monarch butterflies in a poor Tennessee town, a scientist whose life work has been dedicated to researching the migratory flights of Monarchs turns up with some post graduate students to study the phenomena, she is hired to work on the project. The reader has already seen the intelligence in Dellarobia and she becomes a valuable asset to the team. As her world view widens so does that of her in-laws behavior and secrets. Her in-laws are cold, even to her children, but hold she and her husband responsible to service the debt on the farm. Her father in-law sees the trees on the mountain above "Cub" and her home as an asset to be clear cut; the means of clearing his debt. The weather of unrelenting rain has made a mire of the farm and surrounding area. The scientist, Dr. , whose study of Monarch butterflies sets up his lab in their barn and sets his trailer next to it. He connects this unknown behavior of the butterflies ss directly accountable to changes in the climate. There are real surprises based on the relationships between people in this book and fact based scientific evidence.

I very much enjoyed listening to this book; the science in it seems quite on target, and the analysis of why Americans can't seem to have a straightforward discussion of climate change seems pretty insightful. Kingsolver writes with a clear affection for both the people and the natural landscape of rural, Southern Appalachia. Some passages are lyrical in their description of the southern mountains, even in the colder months of the year in which this tale is set.The character of DellaRobbia, the protagonist, seems achingly real to me-- a bright, intellectually curious, but poor woman caught in a trap of a loveless marriage at too young an age.Yet she struggles with her passions and desires for adventure, and pits them against love for her children and a desire to be a caring wife. Her internal turmoil created by the arrival of the exotic, handsome scientist who comes to study the aberrant butterfly migration on her property, and the intellectual and sexual desires that are created through her contact with him and with her burgeoning knowledge of the world of environmental science seems quite real. Through it all, her social and cultural environment of small town life and the economic (and intellectual) poverty is well documented. Against the bigotry, resentment, and anti-intellectualism of the rural Southerner, Kingsolver juxtaposes the prejudices and class snobbery of the well--educated environmental activist elites. In the end, Kingsolver gives DellaRobbia a pathway in which she can escape from her caged existence, but she leaves us with the question on how to bridge the divide between climate deniers and environmental activists still unresolved.
