I'm giving three stars not because it isn't good -- It's actually wonderful… up to a point. That point came during the chapter on "Young Frankenstein, when the pages began to repeat, going back to "Blazing Saddles"! So obviously there was a problem with the printing run with a third of the book repeated/missing, including the chapters on "Silent Movie" and "High Anxiety." I'm currently trying to get a complete copy, but I'm just giving a warning to check that you have the full text.
Big fan of Dale's work (not to mention Mr. Brooks'), I looked forward to this one since hearing about it. I was not disappointed. Dale's usual attention to detail is here, including a thorough history of Mel's early years, his breaks with Sid Caesar and the 2000-Year Old Man and of course, his movies. My favorite is a current picture of the hotel from High Anxiety next to the newspaper photo from the movie - it's that kind of detail that separates Dale from other writers, and you'll find plenty of that here. Recommend for movie fans, Essential for Mel Brooks fans.
