Let’s be realistic, “Brannigans Building Contruction for the Building Engineer/architect, ( oops I mean ) Fire Service,†is not a must read. Unfortunately it’s a must read for me, because it’s a book on a promotional exam. This book goes far beyond what a firefighter needs to know of Building construction. Not to mention is truly only useful if you live on the east coast, since 95% of what is referenced is east coast, NY mainly, construction. After reading this book, the main take away is sprinklers are good, truslofts/cocklofts are bad, although no one has ever seen or expienced one CO explosions are a HUGE concern, and finally steel cable fails at 800 degrees. Terrible book, written by a propeller head, that goes way beyond the needs of the fire service. KISS ( keep it simple stupid ) is what this books needs to be.
One of the worst written and organized texts on building construction I have ever read. Anyone choosing this text as a requirement for a promotional exam or entry level firefighter is doing a serious injustice to the learning process for these members.Many other options that are far superior, including the IFSTA texts on building construction, are available. Unless you are required to read this text, I would strongly discourage it in favor of a better written and illustrated book. I think the majority of readers will come away more confused and take very little from the scatter brained style writing found in this book.
I had to read this for a promotional process. This book is terrible. Key vocabulary words that have no pictures, diagrams or other references when this is a technical book by intention. Loads of personal opinions by the author that have zero merit in building codes or enforcement. If your department requires this, you should question why. I've read garbage disposal manuals that were more effective in conveying a message.
This book is decent in theories but as far as the explanation it is quite vague when it comes down to construction terms. I read this book mainly because I heard nothing but good things about the course that is offered to departments, but reading this you would have to be a carpenter to understand all the terms that are used and even worse a lot of them aren't in the glossary.In a nutshell: decent book but keep your tablet handy to google a plethora of words and to see diagrams of what exactly is being written about.
This book is filled with tons of valuable information. Unfortunately it's also filled with a billion construction definitions that need pictures. I find myself spending an unreasonable amount of time googling the images that should go with the definitions
Needed this for a class I was taking. The product shipped fast and the book was brand new. There is also a ton of information in these books, often a little too much for my career choice!
This book is very hard to follow while reading, the author goes off subject a lot. Very dry and poorly written book. Vincent Dunn’s “Collapse Of Burning Buildings†is much better all around.
Great book series for anyone learning about the fire service. Very easy to read and understand with loads of information. Great read!
