This book is an excellent collection of note-for-note transcriptions of some of Roy Buchanan's blues compositions. These pieces were transcribed by Dave Whitehill, an awesome player in his own right. Since Dave played with Roy's band at one time, he had the insight to accurately transcribe the solos both in standard notation and in tab. These transcriptions are very accurate, including the chords of each arrangement. Some of Roy's most famous tunes are included such as "The Messiah Will Come Again", "The Wayfaring Pilgrim", and "Sweet Dreams". A guitar player would need to be at an advanced level to master these pieces. However, the intermediate player could glean some wonderful licks from this excellent book. If you are a serious blues player, learning from the Blues Master would certainly add spice and excitement to your playing. It is too bad that a player of Roy's caliber remained somewhat obscure (to all but the serious guitar players) during the course of his life. I would recommend getting some of Roy Buchanan's CD's so that you can hear the tunes transcribed in this book. This would certainly help. Note, there is no CD include with this book.
I bought this collection for the transcription of Buchanan's seminal interpretation of the blues piece "After Hours" - which is surely Roy's greatest recording achievement [a work he was particularly proud of and had pushed hard to ensure it got recorded, according to accounts in the biography "American Axe"]. The transcription of "Tribute to Elmore James" is to me an added bonus, the rest of the book I'm not that interested in.So in regard to "After Hours":I'm pleased with the transcription. It is offered in standard musical notation which is important. Transcriptions of pitch bending techniques can be problematic, but here intelligent use of the notated score and the tablature resolves these problems, and that is no mean feat given the nuances generated by Buchanan's mastery of the string choke.I would debate some of the fingering and positional solutions as can be deduced from the tab score, and on one occasion the keyboard part seems to attributed to the guitar, at least that's how I hear it. But I guess one should credit the author with a high degree of insight as he knew and has played with Mr Buchanan.I found the book valuable, not in order to perform the piece note for note, but rather to analyse and attempt to get inside Roy's head as he approached the familiar 12 bar form and yet managed to produce a masterpiece. As a learning/teaching resource this collection is an important addition to the guitar literature.Of maximum benefit to intermediate and advanced players.
Man, this is great, saves loads of time if you know where to put your fingers. Then you just have to get into the HOW... I've only been trying out "After Hours" so far, it feels accurate.
Awesome
I've always admired Roy, and I feel that he never got the recognition he deserved. I will try to play his music, so younger generations in Mexico could know his music.
I was looking for a particular song he had done and it was in this book. Couldn't find it anywhere else
Perfect!
This book has great transcriptions of great songs by Roy Buchanan who was called the World's Greatest Unknown Guitarist, back in 1971, asked to join the Rolling Stones (which he turned down!!!!!), was a huge infuence on Jeff Beck and taught Robbie Roberson of The Band some of his secrets. The Messiah Will Come Again is one of Roy's best solos from his first album and the transcription is accurate and clearifys a lot of Roy's techniques such as playing off the fretboard, volumes swells and artificial harmonics. This book is a must for fans of Roy!!!
