The inclusion of the term "traveler's guide" can greatly mislead the buyer regarding the book's contents. Aside from a few general hints for travelers to the Middle East, the book is simply a selection of suggested Bible readings and a compendium of Biblical verses connected to various sites that may be visited. (To the author's credit he had thoroughly combed the Bible to find those verses.) The content is overwhelmingly on Bronze Age/Hebrew Bible sites versus New Testament sites. Some site inclusions and exclusions are suspect. Many archaeologists do accept the most current conclusion on the location of Chorazin but the author identifies the location with a utter certainly not found among scholars. Conversely, there are very few archaeologists that do not accept the definitive locating of Cana over the past ten years but Cana is omitted. The author equates the Jordanian site of Jerash with New Testament Gerasa, a position held by almost no scholars for decades. John A. Beck's The Holy for Christian Travelers is a far superior guide for both practical use and in terms of current scholarship.
This guide is surprisingly and disappointingly poor, to the point that it's hard to understand how it got so many positive reviews. The book is barely more than a summary and compilation of the Scriptural verses referring to each holy site. The information on Jerusalem is extraordinarily brief so as to be almost useless. You will do much better to buy Murphy-O'Connor's magisterial Holy Land, or the superbly illustrated DK Eyewitness guide to Jerusalem, Israel, Petra & Sinai, or any of the Lonely Planet or Fodor or Frommer's guides. They are all FAR superior to this one.
I wish I'd bought this before my trip. Even with all of the studying I did, I wish I'd had this book with me. As soon as I got home from 2 weeks in Israel, I looked at my photographs and realized there were many of places I couldn't remember much about. It was driving me nuts to looks at my photos of churches, and ruins and not be able to remember the significance. I bought this book after the fact, to jog my memory...which it did. But, when I saw that it had places for notes I wished I'd had it with me.
It is as advertised: a guide for the touring Christian. Those who wish to get a deeper and more cogent idea of the significance of the places to see will be well advised to purchase it.This is not a critical work of archeology, nor does it attempt to be so.Rather it is for the believer in the man-god Yeshua.Well written, well researched, and liberally illustrated, it was one of the few books I chose to carry with me to Israel.
Must read before traveling to Israel!! I purchased this book a few months before traveling to Israel. I loved that this book had a 4 week bible study too, it helped me get better acquainted with both the OT and NT before traveling. I also thought this book did a nice job of explaining the key biblical sites you visit there and explaining the biblical and historical perspective. It helped me better understand what I was going to see while in Israel and the biblical history associated. I also purchased the book called The Holy Land for christian travelers by John Beck. Both of these books worked well together and each had their own benefits. I would recommend BOTH books before traveling to Israel. If your traveling solo or with a group like I did, both of these books go into the history of Israel and background into each site. I love the bible scriptures given as well that you can reference. I brought both books with me on my trip, they were great resources while in Israel!! Highly Recommend!!!
WARNING: not a guide book! Returning this product. This is just an list of scripture passages about cities mentioned in the Bible. The index in your Bible will tell you everything given in this book. Zero information about the actual sites: only short quotes from Bible passages. The "tips" include a packing list recommend recommending you bring toothpaste, sleeping pills, and head pillow— waste of ink when they could have been describing the sights in real-life terms. I was misled by the volume of 5-star ratings— reading them now, they repeat the same language and sound fake. This product is a scam, and Christians deserve a better resource with real information.
Not impressed with the book. Certainly not good while walking around. Has some good historical info but defiantly no a guide! They should change the title because I expect a lot more out of a guide book. No route suggestions or anything. I've travel a lot, 25 countries so far and I mostly use guide books. Stay away from this one. I think this is more geared for someone who is not going to Israel or the middle east and rather studying the geographical relationships of these places in a biblical context. If your actually going to Israel in particular I recommend. In the footsteps of Jesus.
This is a great book for my purpose of preparing to go on a church-sponsored trip to Israel. It will help me prepare for the actual trip. I also think it will be a great book to have in my library for future Bible study as it has a whole section on different sites with a brief explanation of each of the recorded Bible events that are tied to that site. I also think the maps are good.
