There was no description of this book when I ordered it, but just the fact that it is a Cubicle 7 “Doctor Who” title made it worth a look. This is a sourcebook of four separate adventures for you to use in your Cubicle 7 “Doctor Who” RPG campaigns. The stories are designed to be used for any team of adventurers, whether it is a group led by the Doctor, your own Time Lord, River Song, UNIT, etc. Before I go any further let me warn player characters by putting up the…SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT…read no further please unless you will be the GM for these adventures, as some of the adventure seeds will be more fun if your characters aren’t aware ahead of time of what the story will be about. What follows is for GMs only. The four adventures in this volume are:GHOST ENGINES: A prison ship from the future crash-lands in 1889, allowing its vampiric captive and his bat-monster minions to escape into Victorian London. This campaign is designed to allow the inclusion of the Paternoster Gang as NPC’s, but their inclusion is not a requirement.THE NORTHERN KNIGHTS: An adventure with the Cybermen in Elizabethan England. Set in the year 1575, where the characters meet Mary Queen of Scots.SCHRODINGER’S EXPEDITION: An adventure set on the weird, sprawling space station Anomaly IV which is currently being investigated by two opposing expeditions.THE TOMB OF CLEOPATRA: Archaeologists in modern-day Egypt discover the fabled Tomb of Cleopatra, in which they find the head of a Cyberman. This, naturally, leads the adventurers to Ancient Egypt to investigate the mystery. Officially set after the Eleventh Doctor episode “A Good Man Goes to War,” sidebars explain how it can be adapted to campaigns that don’t reference or include Demon’s Run, the Headless Monks, etc.The main drawback to this volume that I can see is that there are dozens upon dozens of photos from the show, all from the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor’s eras (i.e. Twenty-First Century “Doctor Who”), instead of useful visual reference material regarding the adventures themselves. Granted, these are the eras that the purchasers/users of this book are going to be most familiar with, but it’s odd to see a book of campaign seeds that doesn’t include any maps, artistic renderings of NPCs, and so on. Even when references are made to Twentieth Century “Doctor Who” (i.e. the first eight Doctors) it is in name only, no photos.Given the adventures described, one might expect to find maps of Victorian London, Elizabethan castles, artwork depicting Mary Queen of Scots, visual representations of the Anomaly IV inhabitants, maps of Ancient Egypt, etc. Instead… here, look at some more pictures from recent “Doctor Who” episodes you’ve already seen.Another drawback might be that since there are only four stories in this volume, technically HALF of them involve Cybermen, which is odd since the show has over 50 years of alien foes to choose from.On the plus side, the book does a great job of helping GMs anticipate what questions the PCs might ask and how to answer them. It also gives variant plot mechanics to get things back on track when the PCs diverge too far from the campaign as written, as well as explaining various endings/outcomes that could result and how to resolve them.With the exception of the Cybermen repetition, the four stories here are different and varied enough for every Doctor Who RPGer to find something to like. Volume 2 is no doubt in the works.
