Review
“Incantatory prose . . . unexpected twists of plot . . . a look at the nature of good and evil and how those forces ebb and flow over time.”—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution “Nightwoods propels forward at a suspenseful clip. . . . It is Frazier’s verisimilitude of North Carolina backwoods and how this particular place shapes his characters and their footing in his imagined world that bring this story alive.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Wonderful . . . There’s a dreamy spell set in motion by Frazier’s devotion to his native Appalachians. To read this book is to disappear deep into a meticulously created landscape.”—The Christian Science Monitor “A gorgeously written thriller, as brutal and unflinching yet tender and merciful as nature itself.”—Richmond Times-Dispatch “A gritty new beauty of a novel . . . Its hero is a woman named Luce, and no woman could write a female character who rings any truer.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer

I vacillated between three and four stars. If I could it would be five for writing and three for story. The bottom line is that I love the way Frazier writes. I am a sucker for evocative language: writing that draws a clear picture of the scene and the characters. He is a master at that. For example: "The teachers were angular bright-eyed sisters of a certain age, wielding sharp intellects. Each deeply read in the smart dead Englishmen of past centuries and also a very select few of the elders among American penman." Immediately this brings a picture of these women to my mind. "The shadows beneath the big pines near the shore fall darker than under other trees. The deep pine straw smells sharp and clean. Astringent. It's what those half-moon evergreen urinal cakes are going for but miss by a mile." I can see the place. The story is a bit muddy and decidedly dark but compelling. I guess the true test, for me, of a really good novel is when you can't wait to get back to it. I felt that way about this book.
There are many very comprehensive and informative reviews that are all good and revealing, so I won't repeat them now. Charles Frazier's 3rd novel is wonderful from start to finish. I am an avid reader of authors who respect their audience. Frazier has mastered the writing technique of "Show them, don't tell them". His expert knowledge of nature and Appalachia is a fitting backdrop. He has the ability to target the necessary emotion or description without over-doing or under-doing it. Some people are bored by this understated, but highly effective style, but I am not. It is brilliant writing. His restraint turns out elegant, yet captivating work. Charles Frazier tells a compelling story with vivid characterization; and dialogue that is perfectly seasoned. I loved Cold Mountain and was moderately disappointed in Thirteen Moons. Mr. Frazier has come back with an endearing and winning story that keeps you turning the page. We are so fortunate to have such gifted writer in our time.
Was recommended to me and I was unfamiliar with the storyline or the author, which I usually prefer when reading a novel. I just jump right into it.Let me begin by stating that I really enjoyed reading this. I loved the writing style and character development throughout. His ability to describe feelings and situations is incredible. I did feel, however, that most of the book was just that and the last 1/4 of the book was a sprint to finish the story and then it just... ends. Like "Oh, thats the end... really? Huh, umm ok.."Lots of unresolved situations with which I'm not necessarily concerned, but, for me, made the outcome seem hurried and not half as involved or thought out as the rest of the novel. As though there was a deadline for the release and, conclusion or not, this book had to be submitted. But I could look at it instead that its not about the destination but rather the journey :)
Quirky, authentic characters and striking descriptions drive this story along, but it's a challenge to follow sometimes. I was captivated and driven, but in the end left unfulfilled as I like things to be wrapped up with finality, which is not this author's style, a fact I'd forgotten.I won't go into the story line as it is described repeatedly in other reviews, but will speak to the overall impression I came away with. In this story the writing style captivated me, if not the lack of dialogue quotations which sometimes left me wondering who was speaking. I felt as much at one with the natural surrounding as Luce does in her isolated setting. I liked her and how she chose to deal with the harsh facts of her life by taking up residence in the deserted lodge and fitting herself into the nature around her like one of the forest animals. Anyone who yearns for a simpler life will find her resourcefulness and acceptance of what nature offers appealing. I felt her isolation and sadness, but also her inner strength which is key to her being able to deal with her sister's orphaned and emotionally damaged twins when they are dropped at her doorstep. The time period almost didn't matter in a story setting where things don't change fast and sometimes not at all for decades, but still it was accurate in all the details further building the atmosphere. I could picture the tiny town and occupants, a rough bunch who hold grudges for several lifetimes, but also have a high degree of tolerance for one another and operate by their own old-style code. While surrounded by their history, they live almost entirely in the moment. This book seemed to have a NatGeo Special quality--an unflinching and unapologetic study of the human animal at the most basic level amid breathtaking photography. It is an unusual book--a stunningly detailed portrait of people acting out their best and their worst with little self-awareness and told in the voice of an artist. I didn't find it an easy read, but a worthwhile one.
This book, written by one of this country's leading novelists, did not disappoint. While it is an easier read then some of his books, do not let that deter you. It moves, the characters are well drawn and the reader soon finds themselves engrossed in this excellent read.K. Bruce Florence
I'm sorry I didn't like this book because it seemed to be well written and drew me in right away, but when it turned to fantasy that's when it lost me. A man gets killed and when he "wakes up" he's supposedly in the after life. That's when I quit reading, too much fantasy for me.
As in prior works, Frazier’s imagery is unparalleled.....at times beyond my own capabilities to envision...Yet, poetic and insightful. I think I recognize characters first created in Cold Mountain. His sentence structure is....well, special.
