I knew I was in trouble on page V of the introduction, when the author described his methodology for selecting things for the book as: "We cull, interview, visit and delve deeply to find both the gay and mainstream establishments we feel fit well with sophisticated queer sensibility, with an emphasis on the luxurious, the classy, or at least the truly unique"."Sophisticated queer sensibility"? What in blazes is that? And for the vast majority of us gay folk who aren't or can't afford "luxurious or classy", what are we to do with this book?It was confirmed that I was headed down the wrong road with this book when the author wrote about his friendships with porn stars in Fort Lauderdale, and how condoms and sleeveless shirts are mandatory things for gay men to bring to Florida. Well, perhaps if you're a sex-obsessed circuit queen, but for those of us who are older, settled and want a decent nice vacation, the book is virtually useless - as the author's statements I mention above make his choices of restaurants, bars and attractions all suspect.I deeply regret purchasing this book, and won't buy any others either in this series or by this author.
I had lived in Ft Lauderdale for a number of years and I picked up so many tips on different in-the-know hot spots in Lauderdale, Miami, and the Keys --- the author cherry-picked all the best places to eat, to go out and sightsee. I also bought the book for my sister and her husband, both avid world travelers, when they were going to South Florida and they too RAVED over it! --- they thought the personal insights from the author coupled with his sense of humor made the book so much for fantastic and a great read...and one of the best guidebooks they have read
This book is a wonderful travel guide for ANYONE, straight or gay, interested in visiting South Florida. There are so many great tips and hidden Gems I learned about even though I've lived in Miami my whole life. I especially can't wait to put the book to use and visit some of the "treasures off the beaten path" described in the book. On the other hand even without plans to travel, this book is just a great read. The humor, histories, and personal accounts from the author make it truly enjoyable.
This book was informative and witty wrapped up into one. You can go from tourist to native after just a few pages. I'm someone who has lived in Miami for years and I still picked up a few insider tips about the city and state I call home. Restaurants, clubs and bar for the gay or straight traveler will just be some of the hot spots detailed in this book. Your South Florida vacation won't be the same without it.
I grew up in Miami and really enjoyed going down memory lane and remembering all the important events that took place in the wonderful sunshine state. Most of all I really enjoyed reading about all the new places in my local area. I look forward to using this book in my travels to Orlando and the Keys. Great Tips, Great Read!!
I absolutely LOVE this book...I'm from Miami origianlly...Paul Rubioreally knows his stuff, from the history ofFlorida to where to get the best Mojito...Paul's personality really shines in his descriptionsand makes it really fun!!! Anyone comming to Floridashould have this book!!!!
