This is one book in a group of other titles that bring together what a true, multi-generational family needs to accomplish to preserve their wealth. This is a long and complicated process to bring everyone together and more importantly to sit and communicate as equals. The book is a guide to create this setting. I highly recommend reading this. Underline those pieces that stand out...read it again and underline more....read it again!
I plowed through this book in less than an hour, quickly realizing it was mostly fluff with little relevance to estate planning. Except for some useful pointers on the psychology of beneficiaries, the importance of prenups, and strategies for letting younger family members make riskier investments, there simply isn't much substance.
Good definition of what a legacy really it - so much more than money.
Practically everyone engaged in the practice has been influenced by the thoughtful writing of Jay Hughes, and has read his book on family wealth. So what has been done to change or improve it in this timely 20 year revision. First of all, I would disagree that this is a revision of Jay's original book. In the original we are treated to Jay's story, and how his education from his many clients led to his ideas about family as the core of what matters to a wealthy family. His insights re deep and powerful, but it was sometimes hard for a family to go from his book to designing their own plan. This new book is totally different. It is organized into a series of themes that look at family wealth through different lenses. Beginning with an overview if Jay's ideas about the different types of non-financial capital, the book then looks at the challenges faced by families in using their wealth. In each situation Jay and his co-authors look at how the situation can be approached by the family as a personal and relationship and values-based challenge between people who care about each other, rather than as a legal/financial transaction. More so than the original, Complete Family Wealth is a clear, useful guide both for families, and for the professionals who advise them.
