I have only just begun to read and take notes using this book, but from what I have read so far it is very comprehensive and has very detailed figures. I attend a prestigious pharmacy school and bought this to supplement course materials. I chose this particular book because it is the most recent edition, and because several of my professors had referenced earlier editions to help compose some of their lecture materials.
Received a black and white copy of the book. When realized other students had color copies (same isbn numbers), I returned for a replacement. The second copy was also black and white.
This is THE BEST available textbook for learning immunology; clear explanations, integrative discussion of the topics, and the authors know how to tell you a story in every chapter, so they begin with the principles and then go into the details. Absolutely recommended!!!
I got the kindle version and have enjoyed using it for my class. No problems at my end.
While this book is probably the most comprehensive immunology textbook in the field, it is overwhelmed with detail--so much so that the "big picture" becomes obscure. Whenever a pathway is presented, the authors list the names of nearly all the intermediate proteins/enzymes involved, even if their functions are of little relevance OR are currently unknown. For many students, these details are irrelevant and end up confusing them more than enriching their understanding of the material; if, for some reason, a particular reader seeks additional detail on a particular topic, they can easily obtain the details by reading the references that are cited at the end of the chapter. Additionally, the review questions at the end of each chapter are very simplistic (although this is not a huge factor in my evaluation).
This is an excellent texbook of immunology - I bought it in both printed and electronic editions. I have to admit it is a dense reading, but certainly worth it!
Janeway has the best figures and charts of any immunology textbook.
Excellent textbook for studying basic immunology for the ambitious undergraduate student, normal graduate student, and those who want to brush up on their (ahem) incomplete knowledge. Nice cartoon schematics.
