This is a thoroughly researched and well written book. The story is both captivating and and complex. Mr. English knows how to tell the story, while giving the reader in depth descriptions making you feel as though you are right next to these infamous characters. I'm a huge fan of organized crime books and history. Before reading this book, I had a sciolistic understanding of the Cuban Mafia. This work is a real eye opener and I highly recommend this to anyone interested in organized crime.
Nice research, very interesting, and easy to read. I never new about the existence of this Mafia-like group. The book alsoincludes very interesting historical information about the Cuban struggle to liberate themselves from the Castro's dictatorship. Mr English is a good writer apparently very familiar with the Mafia modus operandi, as well as with the Hispanic people.
Overall pretty good read on East Coast culture in the US. The beginning and middle were strong connecting the Bay of Pigs actors with significant US events and policies in the 60’s-80’s. The last part of the book I felt was unfocused and repetitive. Could have wrapped it up quicker
The book borders a Hollywood movie script with money, drugs, killings, and conspiracies galore. Anybody with a sense of veritas gets the sense that much of verifiable data can be read in the internet of past news reports and court documents and the rest are "heresay" of stories passed down one person to another. Furthermore, it contains several errors (and not in the form of omissions) that anybody can notice especially those of us who grew up in the area of Union City during the later part of the 1960s and early 70s. i.e. The band which JMB Jr. played (Moonlyte/The Moonlights) only played in 1 block party in their four year run and the incident Mr.English describes, never took place. IT IS TOTAL FICTION. There are others minor ones like "Camaguey in the city of Sancti-Spiritus" No such place exists now or before. There's a town named Camaguey in the Province (State) of Camaguey and there's a different city of Sancti-Spiritus in the now Province/State of Sancti-Spiritus formerly part of Las Villas/Villa Clara. Battle Jr. drove a Red 1970 Pontiac GTO, The status and importance placed on Mr.Rene Avila, etc. etc. etc... Still, I find the book interesting ala Scarface but I can already imagine the movie, another gore-filled Hollywood film emphasizing flaws of the Cuban community and Latins in general.
Great read on a topic I know well. It does go quickly, as good books should, and it holds your attention throughout.

Has TJ ENGLISH every written a bad book,I think NOT one of the best true crime guys AROUND start with THE WESTIES AND GO FROM THERE.
