It's unfortunate that someone skewed the average with a misinformed one-star rating. Artis Wodehouse and George Litterst recreated these duet arrangements from original piano rolls. A quick on-line search will give you plenty of information on the transcribers and reference recording.OK, I'm done with the scolding. Here are facts:Duet transcriptions: Drifting Along With The Tide Kickin' The Clouds Away Sweet and Low-Down That Certain FeelingSolo transcriptions: So Am I SwaneeAll but "Drifting Along With The Tide" are included on the 1993 Nonesuch recording titled "Gershwin Plays Gershwin: The Piano Rolls". 'Drifting' is on disc 5 of Stewart Music's multi-CD compilation titled "Masters of the Roll". I found the recordings on the Rhapsody music service. Both are also available from Amazon."Duet" transcription isn't exactly accurate. Although the first and second parts stay out of the same keyboard 'territory' most of the time, the parts trade melody and accompaniment often, meaning players would need to switch places at the keyboard (or reach over each other:-). Without rearranging the score, these are best played on two pianos.I've followed the recordings and don't see or hear obvious differences between sound and score. However, I know there are talented transcriptionists who have complained about incorrect details in Wodehouse scores. Frankly, as one who just wants to play Gershwin pieces that sound convincing, these arrangements are very, very good.
Despite some songs being split into 2 parts, they were originally recorded solo by Gershwin, meaning that they can easily be put back together. The scores are all perfect note-for-note transcriptions of the actual ways Gershwin played them in the recordings, which is the main reason I bought the book. You'll have to be a talented player like Gershwin to play the duets as solo, but they work out fine; no impossible reaches. This book is perfect for 2 early-medium pianists, or one early-advanced pianist, especially if you are a Gershwin lover. I should note that one of the scores, "Drifting Along with the Tide," is not actually from "Gershwin plays Gershwin: The Piano Rolls". It is actually a popular single of Gershwin and the specific recording that it is a transcription of is also available on Amazon as a single, or in some mash-up CDs. Don't let that trick you though, it as well as the others are all perfect transcriptions and are definitely a selling point for me and should be for many others.
Note, this collection is primarily ADVANCED DUETS (two pianos), except for Swanee and So Am I. These are note for note transcriptions of some of George Gershwin's arrangements of his popular songs of the 19-teens and 20s. They are beautifully notated; however, they are difficult pieces because Gershwin was a freakish, brilliant virtuoso!! Thankfully, these are not simplified arrangements. The fact that they are two piano duets indeed limits their usage, but they are terrific recital pieces. And yes, two copies are necessary for performance. I highly recommend.
I had two Uncles who as teens played for the silent movies. They were fantastic.. GG playing reminds reminds me of Ben and Charlie. The Piano Rolls, Vol 1.
Maybe I missed it, but I did not see anywhere that this book has mainly 4 hand arrangements, so caveat emptor. It would have been nice to have a cd of the recordings to see what they sound like, even at a few extra $.
