Sometimes bravery is simply insisting that what is right, is right. Rebecca Langston-George, with the help of Janna Brock's illustrations, tells a modern tale of bravery in For the Right to Learn: Malala Yousafzai's Story. When the Taliban took over the Swat Valley region of Pakistan, they insisted that girls should not be allowed to attend school. Malala Yousafzai, whose father was a teacher passionate about education for boys and girls, was not about to give up her right to learn. She turned her opposition to the Taliban's restrictions into a blog and came to be known around the world for her outspoken advocacy. As her fame grew, so did the Taliban's desire to shut her up. But she fearlessly continued. Soon they tracked her down and shot her. Miraculously, she survived. She ended up becoming the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Langston-George tells Malala's story well. It deserves to be heard by young people all over the world. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

My 8 year old daughter LOVED this book. Took it to her class to share, and many of her classmates read it too. It faces very hard topics in a sensitive-as-possible way... without avoiding them. My daughter now has started raising money for the Malala Fund, watching all of Malala's speeches, asking questions about the middle east, different religions, discrimination, etc. It's been an amazing launch pad. She's now read the young reader version of Malala's autobiography too, but she wouldn't have had the interest if it weren't for this book. Even though it's geared towards kids, I still recommend reading it before or with your kids so you can discuss. It's an optimistic book, but not a light topic.

The artwork in this story is beautiful. I'm so glad to have this and talk with my daughter about the harsh realities of the world. I think hearing malala's story and what she and other girls are going through gave her an new appreciation for school and what a gift it is. She doesn't complain about going to school anymore or doing school work.

I love to teach my English language learners all about Malala Yousafzai's brave fight for the right to education for all. This book does a good job explaining her story, with illustrations accompanying the text. Suitable for read-alouds by the teacher, as well as independent study for both fluent readers and ELL students from grade 3-9, as the language is accessible and interest level is high.

My daughter checked out a book about Malala at our public library and wanted to read more, so I bought this one. What a great book! It is such an inspirational and motivational story for young kids! Would buy again.

Very secular. Most of the book is about the incident, would like to have read more about what she accomplished

Perfect addition to a multi-cultural school program.

This book is truly an inspiration to young girls and older women. Education is the key to success and I strongly believe that everyone should have an equal opportunity to have an education. Thank you for this inspirational story.

Amazing book for elementary students to showcase women empowerment, culture, education around the world, and teach how powerful people can be together.
