About the Author

The remote descendant of Scottish horse-thieving ancestors, Douglas Kaine McKelvey has already bested the dubious achievements of his predecessors by authoring five published books and penning lyrics for more than 250 songs recorded by a variety of artists including Kenny Rogers, Switchfoot, and Jason Gray. Douglas is currently completing the manuscript for a YA sci-fi/fantasy novel, and writing a soon-to-announced work of nonfiction for Rabbit Room Press. McKelvey was born in New Hampshire and raised in East Texas, but now dwells in the long shadows somewhere south of Nashville with his Norwegianish wife and their three half-Norwegianish daughters who seem (strangely) to grow older with each passing year. He also has a dog. And a beard.

This was a quirky, but relatable story. I read it aloud to my kids over the span of two evenings. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. We were surprised—perhaps disappointed—at the abrupt ending. The story is full of authentic emotional drivers, but did not feel manipulative. Moments of joy, sadness, comfort, and danger. I would highly recommend the book as a pleasant, thought provoking, quick read.

I happily recommend this book. It is a good story the whole family can enjoy, written from the perspective of the young girl in the midst of this tale of survival; I'd especially recommend it if you have young daughters - I think it makes for a good book to read out loud together. I love the characters in this story, including the animals which play a large part. This book kept me turning the pages, and the end was satisfying, while at the same time, being open (and it seems, even deliberately hinting) to future tales. Whether its continuing the adventures of the characters in this book, or something completely different, I'd welcome more stories by Douglas Kaine McKelvey; the sooner the better.

A perfect story for reading by the fire in winter! I felt like I was reading the poetry of Solomon, the story telling of Tolkien and Where the Red Fern Grows all rolled up in to one short heart wrenching beautiful tale! McKelvey writes with such longing that you are almost pulled out of your shoes into the story, swept magically along and left reaching for a as of yet not existent sequel.

People seem to love The Angel Knew Papa and the Dog, but I’m just kind of meh about it. It was a relatively sweet story, but I never really cared much about what happened to any of the characters. The angel part was very anti-climactic. It’s very short, so if you want to read it, it’s not much of a time investment, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to do so.

This book was fabulous! As good as the classics like Little House on the Prairie, they take you to another world and acquaint you with a family you soon fall in love with. Also packed with an adventure like story and a heart wrenching story of family relationships and experiences. It was a quick read and so fun to experience! I want there to be another story about these characters.

I read this book out loud to a small class of third graders. A great length for this as it's easily finished in 2-3 sittings. A vivid tale taking us back to hard days taming a piece of land out west. But also about the kind provision of strangers, an angel and a dog. An absolute delight. One third grader said upon finishing, "Well, that leaves you hanging!" A part 2 perhaps??

A heartwarming tale of love, faith and heartbreak narrated by a charming, sweet girl named Evangelina Elizabeth Blake. Living at the edge of the woods in a small log cabin by the river, she works hard alongside her father to farm the land, borrowing a neighbor's mules to help them plow. Evangelina has lost her mother; she takes delight in nature and the few books her father has managed to purchase for her to read. One of her favorite stories from the Bible is Noah's flood; this foreshadows the adventure that will follow. When Evangelina is six, a huge dog rescues her from a serpent which appears during a thunderstorm. She names the dog, Lewis and Clark because he likes to explore and frequently disappears. Not long after, a flood overtakes the area and Evangelina's father is swept away while trying to rescue one of the mules. She is terribly frightened as the cabin is flooded. An angel carrying a lantern appears to guide her. The young girl hears Lewis and Clark barking. A woman named Mary rows to her and pulls her into the boat. Taking her downstream, Evangelina is gratified to learn that her father is alive, but seriously injured. Is Evangelina dreaming? What will her future bring? This book is well written in almost a lyrical style. The reader empathizes with the carefully crafted characters and is swept up in the adventure. I would consider this less than one hundred page book perfect for middle grade readers, but teens and adults will enjoy it as well. Look forward to reading more by this author.

If had a few people I trusted recommend this book. I thought, ok, I'll look at it later.I finally picked it up, and I love it!It is a beautifully written story about a daughter and her father. The author pulls you in with his whimsical style and point of view.I look forward to reading more from McKelvey.
